Abstract

The article describes a clinical case of funicular myelosis in a patient after gastrectomy performed for the treatment of a malignant gastric tumor. Funicular myelosis is a neurological complication of vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur due to malnutrition, decreased absorption due to altered gastrointestinal anatomy or function, or intake of certain medications. The disease is characterized by degeneration of the dorsal and lateral columns of the spinal cord. The condition typically presents with sensory deficits, paresthesia, weakness, ataxia, and gait disturbance. In severe untreated cases, combined degeneration may lead to spasticity and paraplegia. Timely detection and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency is critical to prevent the development of this serious neurological condition.
