Abstract

The increase in life expectancy, physical inactivity, and the growing number of people with excess body weight lead to a rise in the number of patients suffering from osteoarthritis (OA). Given the lack of specific pharmacological treatment for OA, as well as the increasing number of patients with comorbid conditions, there is a need to search for and apply evidence based technologies of physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM).
Based on a review of the literature, to identify the most effective PRM technologies in the treatment of patients with OA, including rehabilitation after large joint arthroplasty.
A literature review was conducted (2000-2025), focusing on randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta analyses assessed using the PEDro scale.
Scientometric analysis demonstrates a significant increase in the number of evidence based studies on PRM for OA (78.4% of publications were produced after 2005). The most extensively studied methods include: physical exercise (52% of publications); acupuncture (12%); low frequency electrotherapy (5.6 ); orthotic management (5%).
Physical and rehabilitation medicine is a cost effective, safe, and pathogenetically sound approach to managing patients with OA. Further research is needed to standardise treatment protocols and improve patient adherence to therapy.
