Abstract

The growing attention to vitamin D in recent years is explained by its significant impact on the developing child’s body and its role in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic diseases. The vitamin D status among children and adolescents of the Kemerovo Region-Kuzbass was studied.
Objective – to assess the vitamin D status of children and adolescents living in the Kemerovo Region-Kuzbass.
Materials and methods. A cross-sectional sample study was conducted using a database of 3071 children aged 0-14 years (2304 girls, 767 boys) and 678 adolescents (505 girls, 173 boys) living in the Kemerovo Region-Kuzbass, whose serum 25(OH)D levels were measured in 2023. Evaluation was carried out according to national guidelines (<10 ng/ml – severe deficiency; 10-19 ng/ml – deficiency; 20-29 ng/ml – insufficiency; 30-100 ng/ml – adequate; >100 ng/ml – excessive level). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 22.
Results. Among children aged 0-14 years, vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency were more frequent than adequate levels (51.5% vs. 48.5%). The mean vitamin D level was 34.3 ng/ml (median 29.6; 95% CI: 33.6-35.0), with no gender differences observed. Among adolescents aged 15-17 years, the mean vitamin D level was lower and corresponded to insufficiency (27.22 ng/ml). Only 33.3% of adolescents had an adequate vitamin D level (>30 ng/ml).
Conclusion. The identified insufficient vitamin D status among children and adolescents in the Kemerovo Region-Kuzbass confirms the relevance of correcting vitamin D levels in these age groups, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable group – adolescents aged 15-17 years. These findings substantiate the need for preventive measures and correction of vitamin D status in children and adolescents of all ages, with mandatory inclusion of vitamin D in health improvement programs.
